College Critter Babies

By Kristina Sossa on June 1, 2014

Our critter babies come in all shapes and sizes; some are furry and talkative, while others might be scaly and silent. Pets are the babies of college–they are the halfway point between a pet rock and an actual child. Most of them are dogs or cats, but occasionally we find a snake or lizard along the way.

A pet is the perfect baby for a college student because it is a comforting friend to come home to. No matter what terrible, awful thing happens to you that day, you know as soon as you open your door your buddy is going to greet you with excitement. You can vent to them all night long and they will not say one thing to piss you off even more. They will just sit there and look at you in confusion to which you will most likely respond, “I know right?! I don’t even get it either.” If you just need a hug, I suggest a snake. They are great huggers.

Pets are better than actual babies at this stage in life because not only are they cheaper and less responsibility, but they also turn out to be our best friends. I know I call my cats my best friends, not because I don’t have any real friends or anything, but because they are really the only living creatures I can stand to be around all day every day. Sorry David. We get each other. When it is nap time, we nap together. When it is dinner time, we dine together. Sometimes at the same table if they want to. Let me reiterate real quick–I do have human friends.

We call our pets our babies because we tend to humanize them. I was just invited to a dog’s birthday party the other night. It was an invite from the owner and on the invite it included her dog’s various nicknames, one being “daugger,” which is a combination of dog and daughter. We all know our pets have their own personalities, just like a little human would. When my sister and I talk on the phone we discuss what our pets are doing as if they were mischievous children of ours. Yet, in my opinion, they are slightly better than children.

If this article has made you seriously consider becoming a critter parent just be aware that while a pet is not a major responsibility as a human child would be, they are still a pretty big one. If you decide you are ready for a critter baby just remember that it is for life, not until you grow tired of them. I highly suggest adoption as a choice of meeting your best friend; there are many good pets at adoption centers that are in need of a loving home. If you are looking to adopt a feline, I highly suggest Colony Cats. Once you pick up your new critter baby, get set for everlasting love and affection.
