10 Locations Students Love When It Comes To Housing

By Francine Fluetsch on May 15, 2015

When it comes to housing, a key factor is where it is located. Different students weigh different locations as better than others, and if the housing hits more than one location it will automatically be higher in the ranking, so let’s take a look at 10 common locations that students would love their houses to be by.

1) Campus

This is probably the first one on every student’s list, because we all know that the further we are from campus, the harder it is to convince ourselves to go to class. Some students don’t have the ability to take their cars to school, so if campus is just a short walk or bus ride away, the housing area becomes that much more appealing.

2) Supermarket

If there is housing next to a supermarket, this is another score in the housing department. Walking for over a mile with heavy grocery bags is not fun, so the closer they are to a giant place that sells food, the better. This is especially helpful for late night study snack runs, and perfect for when students get sick (which always happens around midterms and finals) and they have to quickly go get some medicine in order to function.

3) Food places

Living around restaurants, both nice and cheap, is another dream of college students. We are pretty lazy, so the faster we can get places, the better. Being close to food places makes us feel less guilty about taking a study break to go eat, because it’s just around the corner.

4) Bars

Being walking distance from a place that serves alcohol is something that a lot of college kids will appreciate. They won’t have to worry about getting a designated driver, and the walk will even be manageable if they get a bit tipsy.

5) Clothing places

Whether close to boutiques or to a mall, being around places where they have something to do will also reel college kids in. It’s always fun to window shop, and after some hard tests, all college kids deserve to treat themselves to a new outfit, so retail places are great to live around.

6) Entertainment venues (a.k.a, around things to do)

Procrastinating gets us to do some crazy stuff, so the more stuff we live around, the happier we are. If you are renting in a beach town, renting a place by the beach will be a piece of cake. If there is a concert hall in your downtown area, students will try and get a place close to that too.

Wherever commotion is happening is where students want to be. These places tend to be a bit further away from campus, but students are willing to compromise because the closer they are to downtown or wherever the most things are going on, the less likely they will have to take a car and deal with all the weekend traffic.

7) Away from the freeway

Freeways are so loud, and though a lot of college kids are night owls, they need some sleep too. If you are thinking of renting to college kids, avoid these freeway areas. They are usually more prone to traffic as well, and college kids are not patient people.

8) Close to transportation

If your place isn’t necessarily next to one of the places listed above, but you are close to a public transit stop, this can also be ideal for students. These places tend to cost less, which students love, and if they can still get where they want to go without too much effort, they will be willing to rent your place.

9) Places to study

Some students function better on school work when they aren’t at home, so having coffee places and a library close by are going to look really good to them. It is really annoying when you have to take a 20-minute bus ride just to go get some Starbucks. If there are relaxing places close by that have college kids flocking to them, then you are in luck.

10) Ways to stay active

Whether you are located by a gym, a yoga house, or wonderful hiking trails, students are always looking to stay active, and if you have that in your backyard you really want to point it out. Remember what I said about them being lazy, but if the hikes or the gym are close by they will be all over that.

The great thing is, every student will be looking for something different, so if you have at least one of these things around your house, chances are they will be renting it out without hesitation. If your place is close to more than one of these things, really exemplify that when you are promoting your house/apartment.

For me personally, being close to campus was my top choice, because I don’t want to have to worry about being late or leaving an hour early for class, but I know a lot of people that would rather live downtown in Santa Cruz so they are closer to the beach and the shops down there. It really depends on perspective, but whatever your place does have, really play it up. Show them the bus routes and the walking routes, all the close things around the place, or how easy it is to get to those places, and you’re set.
